Place/d: Colocados en Contexto
Place/d: Colocados en Contexto opened on Friday, October 14 at Texas A&M International University at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Visual Gallery. The exhibition featured artwork created during Cultivarte Laredo’s artists-in-residencies, V-AiR and C-Studio. The exhibition closed on November 11, 2022.
Exhibition Statement
Cultivarte Laredo is honored to present its 2022 Artists-in-Residence (AIR) Cohort in this group exhibition, Place/d: Colocados en Contexto, with support from the Visual Arts department at Texas A&M International University.
Place communicates. It can define interconnectedness between people, spaces, and objects. It can make us feel like we belong, or not. Place lends itself to be embraced, critiqued, reimagined, or rePlaced. In the case of Place/d: Colocados en Contexto, place is a quantifier that determines the broadness of the artist’s inspiration to create. It is a guide that indicates the direction of an idea, and persuades the artist how to proceed with the work, depending on the topic and medium of choice.

Located in different cities but native to South Texas, our 2022 AIR Cohort are placed within the context of their own artistic explorations, their own artwork. V-AiR (virtual residency) artists include Diego Canales - mindless rituals combined with art history and illustration (Houston), Karla Gabriela De La Fuente - labor of the working class and paper making (Mission), Erika Ordoñez - symbology through vanitas, drawing, and text (Laredo), and Itzel Vilches - hyphens and reconnecting through printmaking and installation (San Antonio). C-Studio residency artists include Nansi Guevara - women, mothers, and textile feminist altars (Brownsville) and Nestor - composed silences, bricolage, and transformations (Laredo).

Cultivarte Laredo tiene el honor de presentar su grupo de Artistas en Residencia (AIR) del 2022 en esta exposición colectiva, Place/d: Colocados en Contexto, con el apoyo del departamento de Artes Visuales de Texas A&M International University.
El lugar comunica. Puede definir la interconexión entre personas, espacios y objetos. Puede hacernos sentir que pertenecemos, o no. El lugar se presta a ser aceptado, criticado, reinventado o reemplazado.En el caso de Place/d: Colocados en Contexto, el lugar es un cuantificador que determina la amplitud de la inspiración del artista para crear sus obras. Es una guía que indica la dirección de una idea y convence al artista sobre cómo seguir con su trabajo, según el tema y las técnicas que elige.
Ubicados en diferentes ciudades pero nativos del sur de Texas, los artistas en residencia de Cultivarte, se ubican dentro del contexto de sus propias exploraciones artísticas, sus propias obras de arte. Los artistas de V-AiR (residencia virtual) incluyen a Diego Canales - rituales sin sentido combinados historia del arte e ilustración (Houston), Karla Gabriela De La Fuente - labor, la clase trabajadora y papel hecho a mano (Mission), Erika Ordoñez - simbología a través de vanitas, dibujo y texto (Laredo), e Itzel Vilches - reconexión cultural a través del grabado y la instalación (San Antonio).
